Gilles Peterson, for those of you who are familiar with the British music maven, has been running Brownswood Recordings for just a few years now. We first were hipped to the upstart from the cross-pond vapors we caught from flagship artist, Ben Westbeech:
So the video has its corny moments, but don’t you have a suddenly brighter view of the world as Westbeech’s boyish and uplifting vocals hit you? And that drum programming?? C’mon! He may be a limey, but dude’s clearly melding some classical abilities with some self taught rawness… yet we digress. This post is about Jose James. The whole point is, when Giles Peterson signs someone, we listen and so should you.
James just dropped his debut release, The Dreamer, breathing some new life into Jazz. Reading around, a lot of people are pairing his voice with Gil Scott Heron. Not gonna argue with that, and certainly not gonna complain either. Shit, we should find a few more Gil Scotts out there!
So the best and most relevant part of JJ to our faithful BSC readers you ask? He’s from non other than BK!! It’s doubtful he’s actually a Bushwick representative since he references riding the A Train as a youngin’, but that’s ok. We’ll still give props where props are due.
OH!! And how could we almost forget! JJ will be playing on the 29th at Nublu on Ave C in Manhattan. Check Giant Step for ticketing and event info
Sinden is the truth! Plain and simple. Dude has been wrecking it lately. Got a new podcast loaded up on weekly show on Mad Decent which he spon on his weekly show on Kiss (not the Kiss105 more of the Bushwick readers are familiar with).
Direct from “Hustle Town, USA” comes Glass Candy. I think they’re actually from Portland OR, but it’s honestly at bit hard to find a good information source on them or their “record label” Italians do it Better (and by the way, they do not).
I have to say, from my personal standpoint, I really enjoy seeing bands who take the “Less is More” approach to their online presence. In today’s environment of heavy internet marketing saturation it’s refreshing to see groups like Glass Candy, or Jay Electronica who don’t seem to buy into the whore-yourself-on-the-internet approach to marketing.
I had this thought a few weeks back: Electronic music needs more air horn. Let’s face it, one of the most compelling elements of dance hall music is the siren call of compressed air blowing through a plastic funnel.
Hip Hop quickly caught on to this trend but electronic music (with the exception of a few genre-bending DJs e.g: Diplo) has yet to use the air horn to its full potential.
The other day, I found this Hervé remix of Licky by Larry T & Princess Superstar track. I’ve actually never heard the original track but I would like to give respect to whoever laced it with the air horn.

So, my guess is that I’m a bit behind the curve as far as learning about this new site, but whatever, I just discovered it and I think it’s dope.
“RCRD LBL is a network of ad supported online record labels and blogs offering completely free music and multimedia content from emerging and established artists.”
They feature free music from several hundred artists including Santigold, A-Tack, MSTRKRFT, Bobmo, Does it Offend You Yeah?, and a ton of people I’ve never even heard of before.
