I just read through the monster article The Life And Death Of Bushwick by Steven Malanga in the City Journal. I mean monster in the sense of 3600+ words but if you want the scoop on Bushwick’s history, this is a great piece. From the original settlers’ word Boswijck meaning ‘Town Of Woods’ to the Beer Baron mansions to the rioting, crack and abondoned buildings all the way to present day of the neighborhood’s revival. Malanga outlines all of it. If you’ve got a few minutes, learn your history!

This is a cool art project idea (if I do say so myself).
“Graham Coreil-Allen will create five temporary “crosswalks” demonstrating some of the casual paths that pedestrians take when navigating various intersections in the northwest section of Bushwick. Coreil-Allen will also install interactive posters around the crosswalk sites and other locations. The posters will consist of a neighborhood map with a detail of particular intersections, and will posit this question: “How did you get here?” and “How did you cross the street?”. Each map will also include a marking pen so that passers-by may answer the questions. Coreil-Allen will periodically collect these maps and use the participants responses as plans for installing additional crosswalks.” (from the write-up on ArtCal)

I found this today on Time Magazine Online. Really great pictures of Bushwick and Bed-Stuy by Serbian born photographer Boogie. Visit Time to see this photo essay and hear about Boogie’s photography in his own words.
Oh yeah, and the music to the slideshow is Dr. Octagon.
